Yoga by Yoga Tales

Yoga Tales "What I like about me" program,  introduces children to basic yoga poses that will allow them to learn what yoga is all about while developing a strong sense of self-confidence, coordination and balance.  Classes involve yoga poses and yoga breath work and relaxation skills that the kids really need these days. 


Each session with Yoga Tales will focus on one important aspect of character, such as honesty, kindness, responsibility and compassion. Students are encouraged to discuss their thoughts, feelings and experiences about the topic, and to share their ideas about why it is important to them. Age-appropriate stories and activities help children examine each theme more personally and come to an understanding of their own individual values.

Martial Arts with Howard Kea

So Bahk Do is an ancient traditional Korean martial art that develops every aspect of self: intellect, body, emotion and spirit. Consistent training leads to focus, concentration and improved physical abilities, such as flexibility, strength, stamina and speed. These skills will help your child develop a sense of confidence. Safety is of the utmost importance. So Bahk Do is a non-contact art form. 

Former SCES parent, Howard Kea will lead our So Bahk Do class. In addition to teaching elementary age after school programs for several years, Dr. Kea leads a karate studio here at SSIMS every Tuesday and Thursday evening.  Loose comfortable clothing is recommended. No uniform is necessary.

Art Workshop with Creative Adventures

Creative Adventures, Inc. believes children need more opportunities for creative play.  First through fifth grade children are introduced to classic and contemporary artists and are encouraged to explore a variety of techniques used by accomplished artists around the world.  They have access to paint, watercolor, pen and ink, pastels, colored pencils, aluminum tooling foil and other drawing and sculpting materials.   Children are encouraged to let their imagination soar!


Creative Adventures’ Art Workshop has been teaching kids for 12 years in Montgomery County schools and summer art camps in Silver Spring.  Rosana Azar is a surrealistic oil painter, and has exhibited her work in local, national and international art shows.  Ms. Azar emphasizes international themes in her art programs.


Nature Adventure Club with Echoes of Nature

This session will have a variety of nature related themes, usually with live animals that will be viewed up close and possibly touched.  Have fun with nature related activities and crafts.  Some activities take place outside, please dress accordingly.  Participants are certain to have lots of fun and learning!  


Echo Uzzo, who runs an educational outreach company named Echoes of Nature, brings exotic creatures like bugs and turtles into schools and retirement homes to educate young and old.

POEMS and STORIES with Liz Rees

Learn what makes a really good story or poem. Practice writing and reading your own creations, and collaborating with other students.  This class will be an opportunity for students to use their imagination in a fun, lively way.  For those interested in using French in their poems and stories, that's an option, too!  The class will culminate in a poetry reading performance for parents and friends.

Liz Rees will lead your child's imagination through a series of creative writing exercises and games.  Liz has been teaching creative writing for the last 15 years as a poet-in-the-schools for the Maryland State Arts Council, and at such universities as Johns Hopkins and the U.S. Naval Academy.  The winner of national poetry contests, excerpts from two of her poems are engraved on trolley stop benches in Bethesda.

Wiffle Ball and Kick Ball   with Overtime Athletics

Read It, Eat It! with Kerry Tripp

Read It/ Eat It will be "green friendly".  Students will explore the joy of cooking using locally grown ingredients (saving transportation energy costs) and using lots of veggies.   As always, we start the class by reading a book that ties into our menu and we have lots of fun!  This is an innovative, interactive program allowing children to experience the joys of preparing age-specific recipes and then the children eat their own creations!  The class includes learning the basics of nutrition, cooking, kitchen hygiene and personal hygiene in the kitchen.  All the ingredients and utensils are provided.  


Former SCES mother Kerry Tripp is the adult leader.  Kerry has had years of experience developing and running after school programs for school aged children.

Cartooning with CREATE Arts

Many students are attracted to the excitement and story telling possibilities of cartooning. In this class, you will have the opportunity to create your own characters, story line and dialogue. Learn how to create a sense of time, three dimensional space and sequence of events. Maybe even create your own comic book! This exciting class is brought to you by CREATE Arts, one of our neighbors operating in downtown Silver Spring.  CREATE Arts offers fun and artistic classes and camps programs for children. 

Tap FUNdamentals with Knock on Wood Tap Studio

In this class, boys and girls will continue to learn rhythm tap steps and combinations with an emphasis on fun rhythm activities combined with jazz tap stylings.  Continuing and beginner students are both welcome.  Students should wear comfy pants or shorts (no skirts please).   Tap shoes will be provided to students needing them.  This class will be taught by the director of children’s programs for Knock on Wood Tap Studio.

Ballet Classes with the Bowen McCauley Dance Co.

Come and learn classical ballet from the Bowen McCauley Dance Company, an award winning contemporary dance troupe based in Arlington, VA and Silver Spring, MD. Teaching artist, Amanda Moone will guide students in the basics of classical ballet and inspire them to have fun and express themselves through the dance. Learning through the performing arts inspires self-expression, deliberate focus, body control, poise and confidence, which enhance understanding curriculum and study skills.  No formal attire is required but please wear stretchy, comfortable clothing. Ballet slippers can be supplied, please wear socks.
