Our PTA volunteers are crucial to the well-being of our children and our school community. There are so many ways to get involved, with roles to accommodate any schedule, any interest, and any background (click here for current volunteer opportunities). Sligo Creek PTA Committees for 2011-2012 include:
Academic Support: Supports teachers, by reviewing mini grant applications, facilitating use of volunteers, and conferring on curriculum issues, testing and county-sponsored programs.
Melissa Milkie, Andrea Savoye Advocacy: Advocates for SCES with Board of Education and MCPS as needed. Open After School Programs: Identifies and organizes enrichment activities for students in grades K-5; publicizes and administers the SCES after school program application process. Marisa Osorio, Andrea Savoye, Lesley Gramaglia Book Fair: Organizes the annual book fair and acts as liaison to book vendors. Alice Vorosmarti, Marcy Kreindler Book Share: Organizes book exchange among students at the end of the school year. Stephanie Hartman Community Outreach: Establishes partnerships between SCES and the community at large. Zovy Duenas Cultural Arts: Arranges for the cultural arts performances and the artist in residence programs for the school. Lesley Gramaglia, Stephanie Hartman, Marla Schrader Directory: Compiles the school directory; solicits advertisements to help defray the cost of printing. David Attis Environment and Outdoors: Conducts activities to connect kids to nature through outdoor and science events and projects. Working to create courtyard habitat. Beautification Subcommittee landscapes SCES grounds; helps building services with school beautification projects. Debbie Boger, Kim Marshall McLean (Chairs) Tori Hall & Tim Abrahams (Beautification) Financial Review: Performs financial review of PTA’s financial records from prior year after books are closed. Karen FitzGerald Fundraising Initiatives: Raises money to support the PTA through activities such as the Salamander Stride, auction, Giant A+ rewards, eScrip, holiday sale, box tops, and bake sales. Chair Needed (Fundraising Initiatives) Lisa Tunick (Box Tops) Gifted and Talented: Works with SCES staff and families to ensure that students are appropriately challenged and have the resources. Chair Needed | MCCPTA Delegate; Blair/Northwood Cluster: Represents SCES in Blair and Northwood HS clusters and with Montgomery County PTA. Informs parents on issues important to SCES.
Diane Kelleher Membership: Runs the PTA membership drive and tracks membership. Important events for the membership chair(s) are the Kindergarten Picnic, Back-to-School Night and the Welcome Back Social. Karen Regis, Annemarie Ewing NAACP: Represents SCES at meetings of school NAACP representatives. Tiwiya Savoy Newsletter: Produces and distributes monthly PTA newsletter. Alice Vorosmarti Safety, Security and Facilities: Works with SCES staff on space issues; organizes volunteers to support lunch and recess; tracks progress of Purple Line. Brian Riley Social Events: Organizes activities for SCES community, including Welcome Back Social, Grade Night Socials, and End of the year party. Cathy Hilton-Russo SSIMS Liaison: Acts as liaison to neighboring Silver Spring International Middle School. Cori Vanchieri Special Needs: Ensures that the interests and concerns of special needs constituents are heard by SCES community. Gayle Day Staff Appreciation: Organizes lunch events, Monday morning fruit basket and weeklong Staff Appreciation celebration for SCES Staff. Kari McDonough, Jennifer Tyler, Kathleen Isaacson Staff Gift Fund: Manages a campaign to collect and pool monetary gifts, at the winter holiday, for the staff to use as a group; markets the program through the PTA newsletter as well as with flyers on the listserv and in backpacks. Suzanne Chartol, Lori Kaplan, Website: Keeps PTA website up to date and works with SCES administration to help improve the school website. Yasmina Mudarres World Culture Day: Every other year event to introduce students to world cultures through hands-on activities, crafts, dancing, music. Heavy parent involvement needed.
