Get Ready for the MSAs

MSA (Maryland School Assessment) reading and math tests for grades 3-5 will begin on Monday March 8, 2010.  To help with preparations, SCES Reading Specialist, Linda M. Jones Coxson and SCES Assistant Principal, C. Charmayne Brown hosted an Informational Night at the March 2, PTA meeting.  You can find their presentation and useful links below:

˜ What is the MSA, and what will your child's MSA test look like?

To support our kids in taking the test, we need parents to provide snacks such as goldfish, pretzels, craisins, granola bars, raisins, chex mix, fruit gummies/roll ups, water, and napkins, or monetary contributions.  Donations can be sent with your child to the school office.

Dramatic Budget Cuts Still on the Horizon

At its February 17 meeting, the Montgomery County Public School Board of Education adopted a maintenance of effort budget for FY2011 that would continue current program support.  However Superintendent, Jerry Weast, has warned that large-scale cuts could still go into effect if the MCPS budget is not fully funded.  Such cuts would dramatically affect our overall school resources including staffing, class sizes, media center support, and instructional materials.  They will also eliminate transportation for the French Immersion program.  Read more and take action here.

PTA Book Fair Success

Picture
Once again the PTA’s annual book fair was a resounding success.  Both English and French suppliers will match sales with book credits that are used to fill teacher wish lists, purchase new books for the Media Center, and provide book-fair coupons to students who may need assistance.  The book fair was held in conjunction with Sligo Creek’s Fall into Learning campaign and complemented teacher’s efforts to foster reading.  This year Sligo Creek also welcomed a local children’s writer and illustrator, Marie-Isabelle Callier.  Her visit was a rare opportunity for French Immersion students to hear from an author in French.  Mme Callier stayed on after her visit to sign copies of her books for school families.  Thank you to Sara Melnick for another successful book fair, to all the numerous volunteers who staffed the fair, and to Marielle Allor for organizing Mme. Callier's visit.

Green School Initiative!

Picture
If you haven't had a chance to see the newly landscaped slope above the teachers' parking lot, be sure to check it out!  The old grass has been replaced with native shrubs to eliminate mowing the steep slope, and provide nectar and berries to wildlife.  The project was made possible through a generous grant from the Audubon Society.  A huge shout out to Gina Riazi, Tim Abrahams, Tori Hall and all the families who helped complete this project! Photos of the work may be viewed here.
