Welcoming our Incoming PTA Co-Presidents
Diane Kelleher: I'm thrilled to be serving as co-President next year with Stuart Kern. I'm a new parent at the school; my daughter is in kindergarten. I've got a 2 year old at home as well, so Sligo Creek will be my home for a while! I filled in as Secretary for the PTA starting at the end of January, and it's been a wonderful few months. The parent and staff dedication to the school is amazing to see, and I hope next year offers more of the same. I've really enjoying meeting other Sligo Creek parents at the various PTA events this year. When I'm not helping out with the PTA, I work as an attorney at the Department of Justice doing civil defense litigation.
I know that next year will bring even more challenges to Sligo Creek with further budget reductions and adjustments to the decreased size of the Academy program (particularly with respect to the kids who will be entering 4th grade in the fall). The PTA will do all it can to help Sligo Creek meet those challenges. To make sure our school is supported, and that parent voices are heard and heeded, I hope you'll consider contributing your time and energy to the PTA.
Stuart Kern: I'm excited to join Diane as co-president of the PTA. We've got a great school, with warm and professional teachers, administration, and staff, and engaged parents, and I appreciate the opportunity to get more involved in the PTA. I've worked on several PTA projects - meeting with our state legislators in Annapolis on school funding issues, testifying to the Board of Education on budget issues - but this will be my first Board position with the PTA.
I have two daughters at SCES, in first and third grades. By day (between trips to school), I make custom furniture. I'm also a serious endurance runner, happy to share my thoughts on training and racing.
I'm deeply appreciative of the PTA officers and committee chairs for all the work they have done building a healthy and vibrant PTA, and of the many parents who volunteer to help with the myriad tasks that support our school. I've gotten to work with many parents as we arrange class parties, volunteer at field day, mentor 4th and 5th grade science fair candidates, run the book fair, serve spaghetti, arrange and deliver flowers to teachers. This is all hard work that invariably pops up at inopportune times, but over the course of a year - and over the course of the six-plus years we may spend at SCES - we get to know each other and each others' families, and we build a community.
